Shading some of the cells causes a reverse current and forces the diode to open which bypasses the shaded part of the panel. This accelerated failure can occur for two reasons: the overall panel and junction box temperature is much higher when most of the panel is exposed to sunlight, and voltage and current flowing through the panels and diode are higher when only a small portion of a panel is shaded during the middle part of the day.
To overcome this issue, blocking diodes are used to block the current flow back to the solar panels which prevents the draining of battery as well as protect the solar cells from hot-spots due to dissipating power inside it which lead to damage the solar cell.
