The central inverter is considered the most important core equipment in the Mega-scale PV power plant which suffers from several partial and total failures. This paper introduces a new methodology for Failure Causes Analysis (FCA) of grid-connected inverters based on the Faults Signatures Analysis (FSA).
The failure modes of the power electronics are complicated and are affected by many factors, but thermal cycling (i.e., temperature swings inside or outside the devices) are one of the most critical failure causes in power inverters. The new generation of PV inverters are becoming more efficient, with efficiencies greater than 97% .
Review and record the root causes of the inverter failures. Link the fault signatures to the expected root causes. Propose a future work plan by data gathering for one year of inverter operation. Data analysis to get symptoms referring to the fault prior to the failure.
Hereby, this paper focuses on the central inverter Failures Causes Analysis (FCA). Hence, this paper presents a new methodology of FCA-B-FSA which studies the inverter Failures Causes Analysis (FCA) based on the Fault Signatures (FSs) as a main objective, then the outcomes link each Fault Signature (FS) to the corresponding Root Cause (RC).
This paper reviewed several publications which studied the failures of the PV power plant equipment’s and presented that the central inverter failures rate is the highest for the PV power plant equipment’s which affected negatively in both PV power plant availability and ROI.
