The case of Western Balkans - ScienceDirect Economics of electric energy storage. The case of Western Balkans State of the art of technology and application of pumped hydro and battery storage systems. Overview of the installed electricity storage capacities in Western Balkans.
NGEN also describes the battery system as the largest Tesla-made one operational in Europe. According to Damien Merlak, NGEN's co-founder, the storage system will also benefit renewable energy efforts in the country. So far, Slovenia gets 32% of its energy from renewable sources.
Batteries such as lead-acid, sodium-sulfur, and nickel-cadmium can be applicable for price arbitrage and bulk storage, besides other applications, as in distributed storage, mobile applications, and besides having shorter calendar life as compared to pumped hydro storage systems.
Results for 4000 full load hours, considering average electricity price, are the lowest costs of 98 €/MWh for PHS, 226 €/MWh for NaS and 426 €/MWh for lead-acid, following 546 €/MWh for Li-ion and 574 €/MWh for Ni–Cd. In practice these costs are higher, considering the system could operate to a maximum of 300 cycles a year.
