Is it safe to short a capacitor before removing it?

Is it safe to short (discharge) an AC capacitor before you remove it from the circuit. Or do you have to wait until after you remove it from the unit? Always short the capacitor as early into the disassembly process as you can.

What happens if a capacitor fails?

If they are chained serially and one fails open, then the capacitor won't discharge. If they are in parallel and one fails shorted, then you'll get a big spark when the capacitor discharges. Seems like you'd want both, like 2 parallel banks of 5?

What happens if reservoir capacitor voltage goes below 0.6V?

Once the reservoir capacitor voltage goes below 0.6Vthere's not much you can do, because any transistor you try to use to discharge it further will also be turned off. However you could discharge the capacitor in the time delay circuit before the reservoir capacitor goes below 0.6V.

Why is my filter capacitor charged to a high voltage?

This circuit gives me a dc volatge level equal to the mains peak voltage ( we have 220 Vac at 50hz). When the power is turned off, the filter capacitor remains charged to the high voltage level because the circuit which is been powered by this supply is of very high impedance and draws negligible current.

How can a capacitor be calculated?

Capacitance and energy stored in a capacitor can be calculated or determined from a graph of charge against potential. Charge and discharge voltage and current graphs for capacitors. A closed loop through which current moves - from a power source, through a series of components, and back into the power source.

Can a time delay capacitor be discharged?

However you could discharge the capacitor in the time delay circuit before the reservoir capacitor goes below 0.6V. This will completely remove power from the MCU so it should reset properly, and when the battery is reconnected the power on delay will be reapplied.
