During this period, the solar industry has witnessed technological advances, cost reductions, and increased awareness of renewable energy’s benefits. As more than 90% of the commercial solar cells in the market are made from silicon, in this work we will focus on silicon-based solar cells.
Silicon solar cells can be based on amorphous or crystallised silicon. The crystallised form is preferrable and most commonly used, as this material has demonstrated the highest power conversion efficiency (PCE).
In short, the outstanding conversion efficiency and user-friendly cost of crystalline silicon solar cells prove successful, while the disturbing nature of amorphous silicon solar cells demonstrates several optical and electrical properties, like high absorption coefficient and Staebler-Wronski Effect, never before anticipated.
This, in turn, affects the solar cells’ properties, particularly their efficiency and performance. The current laboratory record efficiencies for monocrystalline and multicrystalline silicon solar cells are 26.7% and 24.4%, respectively .
