In contrast to lead-acid batteries, lithium-ion battery systems have always an integrated battery management, which has to be able to communicate with the power electronic components (battery inverter, charge controller) and the supervisory energy management system.
Within this section, some relevant stationary applications for lithium-ion battery systems are considered in the context of backup for grids with a high fraction of fluctuating renewable energy sources. 2.1. Residential Battery Storages in Combination with PV Systems
Despite the continuing use of lithium-ion batteries in billions of personal devices in the world, the energy sector now accounts for over 90% of annual lithium-ion battery demand. This is up from 50% for the energy sector in 2016, when the total lithium-ion battery market was 10-times smaller.
Therefore, in combination with 6 kWp of photovoltaic a convenient lithium-ion battery size is 6.3 kWh in this example, whereas 90% of the capacity of the considered lithium-ion technology can be used. In Table 13.2 the equivalent annual full cycle numbers for different lead-acid and lithium-ion battery sizes are shown.
Li-ion batteries have a typical deep cycle life of about 3000 times, which translates into an LCC of more than $0.20 kWh −1, much higher than the renewable electricity cost (Fig. 4 a). The DOE target for energy storage is less than $0.05 kWh −1, 3–5 times lower than today’s state-of-the-art technology.
