How Often Do They Need Changing? The current estimate is that an EV car battery will last from between 10 to 20 years before needing to be replaced. Having said this, needing to pay over £8,000 for a new Tesla Model S battery every 10-20 years would likely encourage most to stick to their petrol and diesel engine vehicles.
Like all batteries, the cells that power an EV will degrade over time. However, our data shows that while battery degradation in EVs is an issue, it’s not as bad as you might think. In our survey, we asked over 3,000* owners of EVs to tell us by how much the range of their car had decreased since they bought it. *Source: Latest Which?
The techno-economic assessment of automated battery pack disassembly shows that automation can indeed decrease costs compared to manual disassembly. This, in turn, might lead to reduced gate fees paid to off-set expenses of the recycling facility or, in the best-case result, in a profitable EV battery recycling process.
This means defects can be missed and not identified until the battery shows visible damage, such as swelling, which is often when the battery is beyond repair.
The technique, published as part of a study in the Journal of Energy Storage, could be used to identify battery problems much earlier, before they reach the point of no repair, helping to extend their life cycles, reduce electronic waste and the demand for new batteries that use critical raw materials.
Of course, there will always be EV batteries that perform worse than others. The good news is that if you’re unlucky enough to find yourself with a battery that’s degrading quicker than expected, it’s likely any repairs (or even a full battery replacement, which can be very costly) will be covered under the manufacturer warranty.
