Thorium-based nuclear batteries have emerged as a promising alternative to traditional energy sources in vehicles. These batteries utilize thorium, a naturally occurring radioactive element, to generate power through nuclear reactions.
Thorium-based nuclear power generation is fueled primarily by the nuclear fission of the isotope uranium-233 produced from the fertile element thorium.
Thorium abundance, its physical, chemical and neutronic properties were evaluated in comparison to the uranium fuel cycle to determine thorium fuel sustainability for next generation nuclear industry.
This publication summarizes the results of an IAEA coordinated research project focussed on options for the deployment of thorium based nuclear energy. The enhanced capabilities of thorium based fuels for high conversion ratio fuel cycles, improved inherent safety characteristics, reduced minor actinide production are presented.
