An increasing number of local and foreign companies are interested in building energy storage facilities in sun-loving Greece using battery technology. In fact, the Regulatory Authority for Energy (RAE) has been receiving applications for permits concerning battery storage plants.
However, the disadvantages of these electrochemical energy storage systems include the following: life time reduction at temperatures below 0°C (at − 20°C for lithium-ion batteries, the number of charge–discharge cycles can be reduced by 50%). Lead-acid batteries are used as short- and medium-term energy storage systems.
Public Power Corp. (PPC) has also set its sight on storage and recently received a permit for a 100 MW project in Ptolemaida in Western Macedonia. Other companies include Magna Victoria, Melven, Mars BESS and MS Komotini, which have already received permits for a combined 400 MW of battery capacity in various large projects.
In fact, the Regulatory Authority for Energy (RAE) has been receiving applications for permits concerning battery storage plants. In total, Balkan Green Energy News reported, applications to RAE reached 1.6 GW during October’s licensing cycle. This is on top of projects with 23.5 GW in total that were already submitted by over 300 companies.
AMFILOCHIA PUMPED STORAGE The project “ Hydro Pumped Storage Complex in Amfilochia ” is the largest investment in energy storage in Greece. It is characterized as a Project of Common Interest, under the code name PCI 3.24, since October 2013 and a Strategic Investment, since 2014.
However, the most promising ESS include lithium-ion batteries and liquid air energy storage systems, due to their particular advantages. Nevertheless, further research and development is required to improve the energy efficiency of ESS.
